NEW UPDATE ON KALEB! March 7, 2010

As a fellow animal lover, I have set up this site to help Kaleb. Kaleb was dragged for a quarter mile, while hanging by one paw from underneath a car, during the morning rush hour. It costs, on average, $30 per day to take care of Kaleb, and he has no owner at the moment. In these tough economic times, everyone is struggling. And we all know there are many, many other noble uses for our "spare" money. But Kaleb survived a horrific ordeal which is a miracle. So maybe a few dollars here and there can add up to another miracle for him.

Kaleb’s story in detail follows below. He is currently being treated at the Cat Hospital of Orlando. They are a very friendly group of people who have come to love Kaleb and want him to be able to stay there as long as possible. Please feel free to contact me to ask any questions, as the staff at The Cat Hospital is very busy and we don't want to inconvenience them. We are accepting donations for Kaleb's care via Paypal using the button below. We can also accept donations by mail or in person (e-mail or call for info) or directly to The Cat Hospital of Orlando if you prefer.

Kaleb’s Story

Kaleb is a sweet kitty who we think is about four years old. He was born as a stray, but his endearing personality helped him gain some friends in the complex where he lives. They have cared for him, fed him and even taken him to the vet to be neutered, but he prefers to live outdoors with his other cat friends. That he survived what happened to him is a true miracle.

About three weeks ago, Kaleb was asleep underneath a car in his complex. When the owner of the car started it, Kaleb woke up and tried to get down, but couldn't because one of his little paws got caught in the underworking of the car. The driver, having no idea that Kaleb was even there, backed out and began his commute to work, which involves a ride on I-4. As he left the complex, little Kaleb held on for dear life by one paw, while his body and the other three paws were dragged underneath the car. He could not break free and was certain to have died this way. Fortunately, another driver noticed him hanging from the engine of the car and frantically began to try to wave the driver down and alert him to what was happening. She was persistent and managed to get him to pull over in a supermarket parking lot, about a quarter mile from the housing complex. At this point, Kaleb was still stuck under the car and bleeding profusely. Animal control was called to help remove Kaleb. At this point, even though Kaleb was not dead, his prospects weren't good. Animal control doesn't do much with strays except take them to the shelter where they will most likely be euthanized after a short stay if no one adopts them. But that is for healthy kitties. A cat like Kaleb, injured and bleeding, with no owner, and requiring expensive veterinary care, would surely have been put down immediately. But, Kaleb is a Miracle Kat, and it just so happened that as the two cars pulled into the parking lot at the supermarket, one of Kaleb's friends from the complex was finishing up her shopping and coming out. The driver of the car recognized her and called her over and she got there just in time to tell the animal control people that Kaleb was "her" cat. They yanked Kaleb free from the car and he was taken to the hospital.

Miraculously, Kaleb did not break any bones. The three legs that were dragged are completely raw and devoid of fur. They are healing, but may need skin grafts at some point. He is bright eyed and alert, but in much pain. At the Cat Hospital they have bandaged him up and are giving him a good prognosis. But his care is involved and must be completed at the Hospital by trained professionals. He must have his bandages removed and changed every other day, and they need to be kept moist at all times, so someone has to wet them every few hours. Kaleb needs to stay at the Hospital in order to recuperate fully. Some of the people that know Kaleb have been trying to pay for his care and keep him from being discharged early because of the expense. The Cat Hospital has generously volunteered to waive some of the costs for helping Kaleb, but his care and pain medications still cost money, and pretty soon he will be out of miracles.

Kaleb is a special cat, and once he has recovered and healed, he will be adopted out to a loving home so that he no longer has to live in the parking lot. Hopefully, we will be able to make sure he gets the care he needs to get back on his feet! Please consider helping out with a small donation. Any amount would be greatly appreciated, by Kaleb, by his friends, and by me.

Thank you for taking the time to read this!

Kaleb is still under care at The Cat Hospital of Orlando. He is doing better, but still has a long way to go. His infections are showing signs of healing. Unfortunately, he will not be a candidate for skin grafting due to the nature of his injuries. What this means is that he will have to do the healing all on his own and he may require a longer stay at the Hospital. We have received an outpouring of support from the community and we are VERY thankful to all who have donated for his care, e-mailed or called with their kind words and passed on this website to their fellow animal lover friends. Since Kaleb is not ready to be released yet we need to continue our efforts to keep him at the Hospital so that he can heal properly.

We appreciate anything you can do to help out in this regard! We will update again shortly!

Sunday, March 7, 2010 Update

Kaleb is doing much better at The Cat Hospital. He is still in need of their care and cannot be released yet, but he has  made improvements and is starting to move around and try out walking and climbing. All of his injuries are healing nicely and we are VERY happy about it! He DOES still need to be taken care of by the loving staff at The Cat Hospital, so any donations are still greatly needed.

Thanks,
~Suzanne
